A Winter’s Day on Rotoroa Island - Top Tips
Wondering how to spend a winter’s day on the island?
Here are our top tips for a fun family day
10am Arrive by ferry - Welcome, chance to orientate yourself, a gentle 10 min walk to the central part of the island where the museum is located.
11am - Guided Nature walk with our island ranger - great intro to the island and chance to experience endangered wildlife
12:30pm - Take in amazing 360 degree views from North Tower point, explore the northern part of the island stopping for a picnic lunch at MaiMai or Cable Bay. Hopefully spot pateke at Cable Bay wetlands.
1:30pm - Explore the Southern loop track, where the most intensive planting has been achieved. We recommend stopping at Men’s Bay, Trevor’s Dam Wetlands, Chris Booth Sculpture and Ruthe Point lookout - great picnic spots for afternoon tea, or a rest with a book.
2:30pm - Return to central part of the island to explore the small museum, discovering the island’s history.
2:45pm - Kiosk is open (conservation books, postcards - a chance to send one!)
3:15pm - Start making your way to ferry, for 3:45pm departure.
A great nature escape during winter!
