The takahe release scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed. The recent discovery of a rat on the previously pest free island means the release can no longer go ahead.

"In the interest of our soon-to-be residents we want to assure everyone that Rotoroa remains a pest free island before we release takahē. The rat may have swum to Rotoroa from Waiheke or Ponui or hitched a ride on a boat. This is the first test of our rigorous biosecurity procedures, and we would like to be sure we've done all we can to remove the rat before takahē arrive." says Rotoroa's ecologist Jo Ritchie.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, but hope that once the island returns to its pest free status, you will join us for this historic occasion."
