Applications are open for our 2017-18 Summer Volunteer Programme. This is your chance to be actively involved as a visitor host in a working wildlife sanctuary. Find out how to apply and what you can expect when choosing to volunteer with us.

What​ ​is​ ​the​ ​Rotoroa​ ​Island​ ​Summer Volunteer​ ​Programme?
The​ ​objective​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Rotoroa​ ​Island​ ​Trust​ ​is​ ​to​ ​contribute​ ​to​ ​conservation​ ​and conservation​ ​education​ ​in​ ​New​ ​Zealand​ ​through​ ​the​ ​restoration​ ​and​ ​maintenance​ ​of​ ​the island​ ​as​ ​a​ ​conservation​ ​park​ ​and​ ​the​ ​establishment​ ​of​ ​a​ ​wildlife​ ​sanctuary.​ ​​ ​In​ ​addition the​ ​Trust​ ​continues​ ​to​ ​value​ ​and​ ​acknowledge​ ​the​ ​history​ ​of​ ​the​ ​island.​ ​​ ​The​ ​goal​ ​of​ ​the volunteer​ ​programme​ ​is​ ​to​ ​support​ ​the​ ​Rotoroa​ ​Island​ ​Trust​ ​to​ ​build​ ​understanding​ ​and knowledge​ ​of​ ​this​ ​work​ ​and​ ​to​ ​inform,​ ​engage​ ​and​ ​empower​ ​visitors​ ​into​ ​action.

Who​ ​should​ ​apply?
Anyone​ ​who​ ​is​ ​18​ ​years​ ​or​ ​over​ ​and​ ​has​ ​a​ ​passion​ ​for​ ​the​ ​conservation​ ​of​ ​New​ ​Zealand wildlife​ ​and​ ​fauna,​ ​a​ ​desire​ ​to​ ​learn​ ​and​ ​share​ ​knowledge​ ​with​ ​visitors​ ​and​ ​confident speaking​ ​skills.

What is the Rotoroa Island Volunteer Programme?
The objective of the Rotoroa Island Trust is to contribute to conservation and conservation education in New Zealand through the restoration and maintenance of the island as a conservation park and the establishment of a wildlife sanctuary.  In addition the Trust continues to value and acknowledge the history of the island.  The goal of the volunteer programme is to support the Rotoroa Island Trust to build understanding and knowledge of this work and to inform, engage and empower visitors into action.
Who should apply?
Anyone who is 18 years or over and has a passion for the conservation of New Zealand wildlife and fauna, a desire to learn and share knowledge with visitors and confident speaking skills.
What will I be doing as a Visitor Host?
Your activities will vary from week to week and are likely to include:
Enhancing visitor experience e.g. providing information on all aspects of the island, providing directions, wildlife spotting
Impromptu visitor talks
Assisting with cleaning and upkeep of the visitor areas and education facilities
Assisting with light grounds work eg weeding
Assisting with biosecurity checks
What commitment will I need to make?
Volunteers will need to be able to commit to volunteering for one day fortnightly on either a weekday or a weekend day on Rotoroa Island and be available for 3 months during our summer season 26 December 2017 - 31 March 2018.
The ferry departs from Auckland CBD at 8.45am and returns to the CBD at 5pm on weekdays and 6:30pm on weekends. All volunteers are allocated a one hour lunch break to relax and explore the island, along with a ferry ticket.
Will I have direct contact with animals?
You will not have direct contact with animals however in working as a volunteer on Rotoroa, you will see the wildlife around you, learn about the different species through observation and also through chatting to Auckland Zoo fieldwork team members and the permanent island staff. You may, from time to time, have the opportunity to be present when animals are being translocated or checked by field conservation staff.
What will I learn?
Rotoroa Island volunteers can expect to receive:
• Induction to Rotoroa Island's health and safety
• Introduction to Rotoroa Island's restoration programme; including key biosecurity messages and an understanding of biosecurity hazards to be alert for.
• You will also learn about the different species through observation and through also through chatting with the other staff on the island, with regards to identification, breeding biology, call sounds, habitat etc.
