Newly renovated with a large communal lounge and fully equipped kitchen, The Superintendent's House offers comfortable family-friendly hostel-style accommodation in the heart of the Hauraki Gulf. It is ideal for both individuals and large family groups.

The Superintendent's House on Rotoroa Island was the former home of the island's most senior Salvation Army staff member, the Superintendent. Consequently it occupies a lovely spot with beautiful views across the Gulf and over to Coromandel. It's an easy five minute walk from the wharf where you disembark.

Bathroom facilities in The Superintendent's House are shared (there are no ensuite rooms). Pillows (but not pillowcases) are provided; all other linen is BYO (incl. sleeping bags, sheets, duvets and towels). Basic provisions such as tea, coffee, sugar and oil are provided; all other food and beverages you must bring yourself. It's fine to drink the tap water (which is filtered).

Guests staying in The Superintendent's House are responsible for keeping the house clean and tidy; please do your own dishes and keep the house as you would like to find it when you leave. Cleaning supplies are provided.

Check-in is at 10.30am, which is shortly after the ferry arrives from Auckland.

Check-out is 9.30am, but we're happy to arrange storage for your luggage if you'd like to spend the day on the island.

An important note about bringing your food and luggage:

Please be aware that Rotoroa Island has a biosecurity management plan in place. The Trust is working hard alongside Auckland Zoo to prepare the island for the breeding and release of endangered species. PLEASE ensure you check your bags and chilly bins for ants, insects or other stowaways, and ensure that your shoes and bags are also free of soil and seeds. Download our biosecurity checklist and ensure you follow its precautions. You will need to bring it with you and present it when you arrive on Rotoroa.
